Sim Racing and GT7 Glossary: The Terms Explained

Plain-language definitions of the sim racing and Gran Turismo 7 terms you'll hear in a league: PP, BoP, Gr.3, Gr.4, slipstream, reverse grid, qualifying, stint, and more.

New to a racing league and hearing words you don't know? Here they are in plain language. Each term is one you'll actually run into in a Gran Turismo 7 league.

Performance Points (PP) — A single number rating a car's overall speed in GT7, based on power, weight, grip, and aero. A race can set a PP limit so all cars are roughly equal.

Balance of Performance (BoP) — The game's built-in per-car adjustment that makes every car in a class competitive without tuning. With BoP on, the only difference between two identical cars is the driver.

Gr.3 — GT7's GT3-style class: fast race cars with heavy downforce. The class most leagues build their main event around.

Gr.4 — GT7's GT4-style class: a step slower than Gr.3 and more forgiving, which makes it the best place for newer racers to learn.

Gr.B — GT7's rally class, used for dirt and snow events.

Slipstream — The pocket of low-pressure air behind a car. Following closely on a straight pulls you along and lets you carry more speed for a pass. Also called the tow or the draft.

Reverse grid — A starting order that puts the slower or lower-placed drivers at the front. Used to create overtaking and give the back of the field a chance.

Qualifying — Setting a lap time before a race to determine starting order. In our league, drivers submit five-lap qualifying by uploading screenshots (see the rules).

Pole position — The first starting spot, earned by the fastest qualifier or, in a reverse grid, given to the driver at the front.

Stint — A run of laps between pit stops. A thirty-minute race with a mandatory tire change is a two-stint race.

Pit stop — Coming into the pit lane to change tires or add fuel. Our main event requires two different tire compounds, which forces at least one stop.

Tire compound — The type of tire, from harder and longer-lasting to softer and grippier but quicker to wear. Choosing when to run which is the heart of race strategy.

Tire wear — A race setting that controls how fast tires degrade. Higher wear means you must manage your pace and plan pit stops.

Fuel consumption — A race setting that controls how fast you burn fuel. Higher consumption forces fuel-saving and pit strategy.

DNF — Did Not Finish. A car that crashes out or disconnects before the end.

Clean race — Completing a race without contact penalties. GT7 tracks this and it is a point of pride.

Stable — In our league, a four-driver group formed at the draft, with a captain and a name, that competes for the Stable Championship alongside the individual title.

Mover of the Night — Our bonus award for the driver who gains the most positions across the night's races.
