History
Brands Hatch started as a grassy hollow on a Kent farm where cyclists ran time trials in the 1920s; some accounts say it was a mushroom field. Cars arrived on April 16, 1950. The Grand Prix loop through the woods opened in 1960, in time for Jim Clark to win the first World Championship race here in 1964. The British Grand Prix alternated with Silverstone until 1986. Nigel Mansell took his first F1 win here at the 1985 European Grand Prix and won the last F1 race here in 1986. Safety work in 2003 tightened Graham Hill Bend. The GP layout still drops through Paddock Hill like a trap door.
Fun fact
Nigel Mansell’s first Formula 1 victory came at Brands Hatch in 1985, in front of a home crowd that had waited years.
The corners that matter
Paddock Hill Bend is lap one: you crest, the track falls away, and the outside gravel keeps receipts. Brake before the drop. Druids is the uphill hairpin at the top, a standard overtake and a standard first-lap stack; don’t squeeze the outside car onto the grass. Graham Hill Bend punishes an early throttle with a wide exit. Hawthorn is fast and unforgiving if you run out of road. Westfield and Dingle Dell are the woods: blind, bumpy, easy to clip a wheel. Clearways and Clark Curve are the last chance onto the pit straight. On lap one, Paddock and Druids are the ugly ones.
Main-event strategy
No rain in GT7 at Brands. The GP loop is short and rough on the right-front through Paddock and Clearways. One stop, maybe a stretch if you baby the mediums on a lean map. The pit entry branches right from the final-corner area; set up early, especially with someone trying to pass outside. Cars that change direction without drama help in the woods: the McLaren 650S GT3 and the Ferrari 458 GT3 are nimble; the Lexus RC F GT3 is the settled braking platform. A stiff, pointy car bounces through Dingle Dell and eats tires.
Garage notes
High downforce; nothing here is straight for long. Gear short, about 165 mph. Softer springs and dampers for the bumps in the woods. Brake balance forward for Paddock and Druids.
Opener notes
The Sunday opener this week is snow at Lake Louise in the Subaru WRX Gr.B. See that page. Brands Hatch waits for Gr.4 and Gr.3.
